Summer is here! That means it is time to gear up for adventure season. In preparation for your 4-wheel drive adventures there are a few things you need to check before taking out your vehicle.
First thing on the check list is a suspension and fluids check (depending on your skill level this can be done at home or we'd be happy to do it for you at Exploration Outfitters). This is not a complete list, but a great starting point:
- Climb under your vehicle and check to see if all the bolts on your control arms or A-arms are tight. (Quick tip - get a paint pen from a craft store and mark your bolts with a line so you know its proper location if it is tight just by glancing at it).
- Check all other bolts on skid plates to ensure that they are tight.
- Check bushings for wear.
- Check tie rod ends for excessive play.
- Check fluid levels and color in the differential, transfer case, transmission.
- Check ball joints for play.
- Lubricate u-joints, all grease fittings, bushings, etc.
Next, if your going camping for your adventure, make sure you have the proper gear with you to make life easier at camp. If you have kitchen utensils and a camp stove, make sure you have a clean/stable platform to use them. We have a new solution for your camp kitchen called the Grub Hub. The Grub Hub allows for a stable, organized platform that will hold everything in place. Your camp stove will have a place to sit, you'll have an area to wash your dishes, hold your utensils, keep your paper towels from blowing away, and even a table to eat at. The Grub Hub folds up nice and neat into a 24x14x38 rectangle on wheels. It is compact and convenient to use. Of course, a wheeling trip isn't complete without a well stocked cooler. There are so many options in this category, from throw away options to 12 volt refrigerator/freezer units. The crew at Exploration Outfitters are huge fans of ARB's line of 12 volt refrigerator/freezers http://explorationoutfitters.com/collections/refrigerators-freezers . They are a definite investment but they work very well, are extremely durable, and you never have to worry about ice again. For a more budget friendly option, check out Brute coolers. They're made in the USA, and are super high quality at a lower price than the other big name brands. They're also available at Exploration Outfitters.
Lastly, don't leave home without fuel & water storage! Again, this is an area where there are a multitude of options. For fuel on my personal Jeep, I use an AEV Fuel Caddy system mounted to an AEV tire carrier. The system is pretty much self-contained, it is tucked up out of the way, and is very user friendly, not to mention packing a whopping 10.2 gallons of extra gas when you need it. Exploration Outfitters is a proud dealer for AEV products, call us with any questions and we will be happy to help! Exploration Outfitters also sells & stocks Front Runner fuel & water jerry cans, as well as a variety of options from RotoPax. RotoPax have replaced the old fashioned jerry can and are much easier to use. They are roto-molded non-static plastic containers that hold gas, diesel, kerosene, dry storage, first aid and water storage. They are CARB compliant and meet the EPA's standards. Two 2-gallon RotoPax containers are the same footprint size as one jerry can! Other sizes available are 1-gallon gas or water, 3-gallon gas, 4-gallon gas. You can utilize multiple mounting options including lockable options. These fit great on most tire carriers, ATVs or UTVs.
These items and checklist should get you started for your season of adventures! As always, if you need assistance or would prefer a professional to do your vehicle check-out we would be happy to take care of you here at Exploration Outfitters!
